It's said the Irish are fond of a drink or two. Any excuse to drink will do. Ireland is packed full of pubs, from the old man’s locals to ale emporiums to chic café bars. Irish pubs are not just a place to have a drink. They are theatres for storytelling, backdrops for romance, homes away from home, keepers of the national spirit, and places to be revered and admired. Old style Irish pubs with a wide variety of antiques, old posters and traditional Irish music are world famous. Guinness stout and Jameson’s whiskey are national Irish drinks.

50-60 years ago, pubs were for men only. The annex 'snug' were small enclosures for womens' discreet drinking. A lot has changed since then.
